On May 9, 2023, the Australian Government unveiled its plan for the 2023-24 permanent Migration Program, setting the allocation of places at 190,000. The primary focus of this program is to address existing and emerging skills shortages within the country while attracting individuals with specialized skillsets that are scarce or difficult to develop locally.
The Migration Program aims to achieve several significant objectives. First and foremost, it will bolster Australia’s resilience, enhance productivity, and provide support during the country’s transition to net-zero emissions. Moreover, the program acknowledges the valuable contributions made by migrants to social cohesion and seeks to strengthen family and community bonds in Australia, reaffirming the government’s commitment to family reunification.
Another crucial aspect of the program is to tackle the challenges associated with an aging population. By bringing in migrants who are generally younger than the current population, the average age is reduced, and the rate of population aging is slowed.
The 2023-24 permanent Migration Program comprises three main streams. The Skill stream, accounting for approximately 72% of the program, aims to improve economic productivity and address skill shortages in both metropolitan and regional areas. The Family stream, making up around 28% of the program, focuses on reuniting Australians with their overseas family members and offering pathways to citizenship. The Special Eligibility stream, with 400 places, caters to specific circumstances, including the return of permanent residents to Australia after a period abroad.
Overall, this well-targeted and skills-focused Migration Program is set to supplement the working-age cohort, leading to increased participation rates and a larger labor force, further boosting Australia’s economic prospects.
Points Calculation
Australia uses a points-based system to assess the eligibility of skilled workers who want to immigrate to the country. The points system is designed to select individuals with the skills, qualifications, and attributes that are in demand in the Australian labor market. The points calculation takes into account various factors, and applicants must meet the minimum points threshold to be eligible to apply for skilled immigration visas.
It’s essential to note that the points required for eligibility may change based on the visa subclass and occupation. The Department of Home Affairs regularly updates the points system and the Skilled Occupation Lists to match the evolving needs of the Australian labor market.
